Midwives and nurses from local government units in the seventh district of Cebu underwent a cancer training as part of efforts to promote cancer awareness through early detection.
The training was participated by representatives from the towns of Alegria, Badian, Ginatilan, Oslob, and Malabuyoc, and was held last August 16 at the Municipal Session Hall of Ginatilan town. It was conducted by the Eduardo J. Aboitiz Cancer Center of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI-EJACC) in partnership with Integrated Midwives’ Association of the Philippines – Cebu Midwife Clinic Inc. (ICMCI)
Ronald Delos Reyes, RAFI-EJACC program coordinator, explained the importance of the training and how acquiring skills will help promote early detection of cervical cancer. Gina Mariquit, EJACC program officer for Cancer Awareness and Cancer Screening and Diagnostics, informed participants of the different programs and services offered by RAFI-EJACC.
ICMCI representatives talked about cervical cancer and Pap smear test, and the proper way or techniques in getting a sufficient smear sample during the procedure. They also conducted a one-on-one demonstration with each participants.
Participants expressed their interest and enthusiasm to learn the correct way of getting the right amount of smear sample and shared their plan to make cervical screening a part of their regular health service delivery in their respective health units.
The daylong training was capped with a Pap smear screening on 176 women from Ginatilan.
The Eduardo J. Aboitiz Cancer Center of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI-EJACC) saves those who can be saved by eradicating the stigma of cancer through its programs in cancer advocacy & education, screening & early detection, treatment assistance and Palliative Care.
