More than 200 Grade 6 students and teachers of the Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) held their annual Integrated Learning through Adventure Program or iLead Program of the Kool Adventure Camp of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI-KAC) in Balamban, Cebu.
With the support of SHS-AdC President Manuel “Fr. Manny” Uy Jr., S.J.,; Grade School Principal Lea P. Amores; and Assistant Principal and iLeAd Coordinator Marisse Paraoan, the iLead Program was conducted in four batches from July 12 to August 2, 2018.
iLead aims to create among participants a deeper understanding of the school’s seven core Ignatian values — conscience, competence, compassion, character, Christ-centeredness, culture, and community; hone leadership qualities such as ownership and accountability of responsibilities, initiative and active citizenship anchored on the school’s theme “Building with the Sacred Heart through Leadership”; nurture interpersonal skills by allowing participants to actively engage with local communities; and provide opportunities to apply and use relevant knowledge and skills learned or acquired through their academic subjects.
It also aims to have the following outcomes:
• use verbal and written communication skills to clearly articulate ideas and feelings,
• be able to exercise one’s deductive and critical reasoning skills to make informed decisions targeted toward the understanding of complex systems which will help improve the overall wellness of people,
• use basic mathematical operations through word problems involving actual transactions with individuals in the community and understand their impact to the economy,
• learn how God’s mission is carried out by the Jesuits and have an understanding of how a deep-rooted moral conscience is formed by finding God in all things, and
• discover one’s role in nation-building and develop an appreciation of social institutions, culture, heritage and economy which comprise one’s locality.
The KAC’s adventure-based learning process introduced experiential activities that were apt metaphors for dealing with the dynamics of a leader at work. These initiatives are highly effective with the element of risk, inconvenience, and uncertainty. With the supervision of its professional staff, real risk is minimized without reducing the excitement of an active adventure challenge.
The Kool Adventure Camp of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI-KAC) is the first and only fully dedicated Adventure Education Center in the Philippines. RAFI-KAC equips organizations and individuals with the character, competence, and citizenship to be leaders of change through powerful learning experiences.
