John Mick, or Jamik, is an educator, and a Kool Adventure Camp (KAC) Alumnus. He values educating students to become good citizens of the country.

Today, he continues this passion through partnerships with RAFI-EDU for the Seal of Excellence in Education Development, and as DepEd partner for RAFI-KAC.

Life Struggles of a Young Boy

Jamick experienced family struggles early in life — his parents separated when he was two years old, and was sent to Mindanao to study.

After his elementary graduation, he was sent to Oprra Night High School to study where he exceled as a student leader and graduated as class valedictorian.

Taking the Education Path

When high school was about to end, Jamik was still undecided on what course to take. He was then approached by Dr. Jandayan who advised him to go to Cebu Normal University and take up Education so that he can become a teacher one day.

“I didn’t know which course to take back then. I enjoyed high school but we did not have much of a career guidance, so it was difficult given that the decision will determine the course of my life.”

“Good thing Dr. Jandayan advised me to take pursue a career in Education and that was the path I chose.” Jamik added.

On Becoming a Teacher, Challenges

Being an educator is one of the most noble professions.

Jamik became a licensed teacher in 2006 and was given his first professional teaching assignment in Bacsan, Cebu where he had only 30 students.

On his first assignment, Jamik immediately saw the challenges of the Philippine education system.

“I was shocked during my first assignment, I never thought that I would experience it firsthand. The chairs were broken, school facilities were limited, and believe it or not, there were times when we saw snakes outside our classrooms,” Jamik said.

Jamik also added that it was normal seeing students making puso, or hanging rice, during class because making and selling puso was one of the primary sources of income for most families in their community,

“It was pretty normal, and I had to empathize with them,”

On Thinking Positive

Jamik, however, said that he never felt alone because his first assignment was in a small school community in a mountainous barangay, and he felt at home.

“We were like family there — that was what made our school different. The barangay people knew everyone, I never felt like an outsider,”

Jamik’s Most Memorable Experience as a Teacher

Jamik said that there was a time when the dike in Bacsan overflowed because of a strong typhoon, and their school was hit with flood.

“The water rose up so fast and we had to evacuate immediately,”

The evacuation was very difficult as they had to hold on to a rope for their dear life while crossing the flood, but they managed to go to safety.

“During that evacuation when the water was already breast-deep, I felt something around my stomach, and when I touched it I was shocked to see that it was my grade 1 pupil desperately clutching on for safety. I didn’t notice that she had let go of the rope to catch her new pair of slippers that was washed away by the flood. It was a blessing that she was able to find her way back to us and grabbed my waist. In hindsight, I understood why she did that — for those children, a new pair of slippers was a prized possession,”

‘Bask’ and His Kool Adventure Camp Experience

Jamik was able to experience Kool Adventure Camp (KAC) firsthand. His camp name was “Bask” which means ‘to enjoy, indulge.’

“It was for a team synergy program and it was super fun. I can still vividly recall the experience — our facilitators were Richard De los Reyes and Dio Obineta. They were really great at handling the activities which were tailored-fit for us educators,”

Jamik is also the partner of the Kool Adventure Camp, through the Department of Education Region 7, in orienting and campaigning for different schools to join KAC.

“What I like about RAFI-KAC is that the staff are young and vibrant, particularly the field people or the front-liners. They are the face of RAFI, the first people that stakeholders will see and remember,” Jamik said.

Jamik and the Seal of Excellence in Education Development (SEED) Award

Jamik was the focal person for the Education Development Unit of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI-EDU) since the first run of SEED in 2016. He was assigned in introducing SEED, coordinating with different schools and compliance which includes technical assistance to produce the best practices of each schools.

“It was difficult at first, most especially that you won’t get 100 percent of the support of the different schools, but I am using that as a motivation to help these schools become more self-aware of what they could achieve for their school and students,” Jamik said.

Lessons Learned in Life

When asked one greatest lesson he learned in life, Jamik said, “do your job with excellence,”

He also remembered that for nine years as the school paper adviser in OPRRA elementary school, the school became one of the best performing barangay schools in Region 7, he was also able to produce two outstanding campus journalists and he himself became an Outstanding School Paper Adviser in Cebu City and Region 7, all at the age of 28.

“Whatever your circumstance is, as long as you do your job well, you are doing a great job!”  Jamik said.

What is a Teacher?

When asked this question, Jamik paused and said, “a teacher is someone who walks an extra mile for his students. I learned this in the most exciting and fun way, and made me realize that we teachers should always think that all of our efforts are for the children,”

On Being Remembered

Jamik said that he wants to be remembered as someone who is excellent in everything that he does and is very willing to share more of himself as an educator.

In their community, Jamik is also active in his advocacy for the LGBT community. He believes in equality amongst all people regardless of their gender or sexual preference.

On People Who Matters

For Jamik, he is thankful that he graduated in a Night High School, he said that he hopes that he became a source of inspiration and become a good example that Night High schools could produce great students same as a regular-shift school.

“I hope that I could share to people that the school is a good foundation for you to grow, to learn,”

“A good foundation can not do you wrong, and always commit for excellence.” Jamik said.

“Thank you very much to the people who have helped me, my mother, my friends, my co-teachers,”

“For always making me feel that I belong to the best class in my elementary and high school years by putting me in the star section, even if I have been a transferee student, thanks to all my teachers in Dapitan City Central School and Piñan Elementary School,”

“To the parents and community who supported me in etching a good name for our school, I could have not bagged our victories without you; may you continue to support the school.”

“To our partners in RAFI, most especially to RAFI-EDU and RAFI-Kool Adventure Camp (KAC) daghang salamat,”

“And special to Dr. Jandayan, without you, I will never take this path as an educator.” Jamik said. #IAMRAFIRAFI

Heavy rains threatened to spoil Cebu’s favorite summer heritage event last May 25, 2018. But as if on cue, it stopped when Gabii sa Kabilin started at 6 p.m., allowing patrons to enjoy the presentations held in 29 participating museums and heritage sites.

This year, Gabii sa Kabilin or ‘Night of Heritage’ invited patrons to rediscover the pre-colonial roots of Visayan culture through its theme, “Balangay.”

The theme for 2018 and the next three years are aimed to heighten the Cebuano public’s awareness of the quincentenial celebration of the arrival of Magellan’s fleet in the Philippines. The themes for Gabii sa Kabilin from 2019 to 2021 will be inspired by the historic voyage of the explorer that changed the world forever. Cebu is expected to be one of the focal points of this global celebration in 2021 as this is where Magellan met his death.

Activities

Casa Gorordo Museum (CGM) engaged audiences with dances and theatrical performances that highlighted pre-colonial Visayan community life. It produced a play narrating a day in the life of a family during that period, children’s stories and a wedding ceremony that showcased pre-Hispanic social norms as well as beliefs on beauty and fashion, the afterlife and the supernatural.

Museo Sugbo depicted a pre-colonial Visayan village while Museo Parian sa Sugbo, the Archdiocesan Shrine of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the Fo Guang Shan Chu Un Temple brought attention to the presence of Chinese culture in Cebu before European contact.

There were also special activities that drew in young audiences. The Dolores Aboitiz Children’s Fund of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI-DACF) organized child-friendly activities in front of the Eduardo Aboitiz Development Studies Center, just in front of the Casa Gorordo Museum. (See related story)

The second run of the Gabii sa Kabilin Heritage Hunt tested the determination and wit of seven teams of millennials, who had to hurdle nine challenges, five of which they had to finish in three hours.

Several special activities were also conducted like the blogging/vlogging contest and the Gabii sa Kabilin phone-o-graphy contest, which featured the bangka as the photo contest subject.

First-timers

Senior high school students from Abellana National High School were among the thousand spectators who enjoyed Gabii sa Kabilin 2018.

The group of Daniel Arquiola, 19; Xavieur Jamar, 15; Icyrie Sevilla, 16; and Harry James Bayron said they had the chance to know more about Cebu through the event. Except for Jamar, the three were Gabii sa Kabilin first-timers.

“I went last year with my family. But I was not able to enjoy it because we only visited one site,” Jamar said.

This time, Jamar said he really enjoyed Gabii sa Kabilin.

“Sulit na sulit ang Php 150,” (The P150 ticket price was worth it),” he added.

Gabii sa Kabilin is held every last Friday of May in celebration of Heritage Month. It is initiated by the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) and implemented in partnership with the Province of Cebu and the cities of Cebu, Lapu-Lapu, Mandaue, and Talisay. To know more about RAFI’s programs in its Culture & Heritage focus area, please contact us through email at rafi.chu@rafi.org.ph and landline at (+63) (32) 411-1767.

The Culture & Heritage Unit of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI-CHU) through its three flagship programs — Casa Gorordo Museum, Research & Publications, and Gabii sa Kabilin — aims to develop a strong sense of cultural identity among local communities by promoting awareness of their heritage and enabling them to articulate their story.

This is the story of Raffy Baladjay and his journey in RAFI-Microfinance where he rose up the ranks — from a Buffer Trust Staff to Regional Manager to becoming one of RAFI’s Exemplary Employee Awardee (REEA) in 2017.

Turning Failure Into Success

Raffy Baladjay’s journey was never easy. He did not pass his CPA Board Exams, and failed those people who were expecting too much of him, especially his parents. After the exams, Raffy went on a special trip away from home to ‘slow down’ and ‘find meaning.’

“I don’t consider it as running away from home, it was just my way of temporarily avoiding those people who were expecting too much from me.” Baladjay said.

That One Phone Call That Changed His Life

After spending a month on vacation with friends, Raffy said that his parents called him asking what he planned to do with his life. He even remembers his mother crying on the phone.

“That question really made me realize something, so I decided to come back home and told my mother that I will be somebody in the future.” Raffy said.

In the beginning, Raffy felt that his failure at the board exam was his first major failure in life, and he realized that God had a different purpose for his life saying, “that failure strengthened my resolve in serving others,”

On Getting Back Up

After his month-long soul-searching, he decided to take on a new journey in life, and started applying in different companies.

“I think I sent 10 applications and decided to work with the first company that will hire me, no matter what kind of job it would be. That first company was RAFI, and the rest is history,” Baladjay said.

Raffy started working with RAFI Microfinance in June 28, 2010 as a Buffer Trust Staff for the Ormoc, Leyte branch. He was promoted to Trust Staff, and eventually became Assistant Branch Manager after six months for the Cebu City branch.

Raffy and His Career Growth in RAFI Microfinance (RMF)

Raffy’s blessings continued. He was promoted to Branch Officer-in-Charge on October 2011, and to a fully-fledged Branch Manager for the Argao Branch on January 2012, respectively before being transferred to the Minglanilla Branch.

After that, Raffy became part of the Renoir Consulting BUGSAI project as Taskforce Coordinator from January of 2014 to March of 2015, where he spearheaded a procurement project with the RAFI Finance and Admin unit for four months.

“After my own project together with my former boss, we set up the RMF Expansion Unit, then eventually became the Set up Manager for a year, and then was promoted to Unit Head for 10 months.”

And fast forward to 2018, Raffy is now the Regional Manager for Bohol and Negros Regions, and then eventually led to his winning the coveted RAFI Exemplary Employee Award (REEA) in 2017.

On Winning the REEA 2017

Raffy said that being with RMF made him a better person, and made him understand his real purpose in life.

“I’ve been with RMF for more than seven (7) years now and what made me stay this long is the desire to contribute more and make more impact to this organization.”

For Raffy, winning the REEA is a “blessing and a testament of my passion, hard work and commitment, and especially with the kind of support given to me by my peers and superiors,” he added.

His Contribution to the BUGSAI Project

Being of service to the organization and helping people through sharing his expertise makes his career more meaningful.

“Being a part of the BUGSAI Project as Taskforce member was one of my meaningful contributions to this organization.”

“In line with the project, I was able to contribute my experiences and expertise in operations and I was able to understand the whole process of doing things and identify opportunities for improving and streamlining various processes.”

During those times, Baladjay was also able to build tools and suggest improvements which helped the processes of RAFI-Microfinance today.

‘A Leader by Example’

For Raffy the most effective way a leader can influence others is to ‘lead by example.’

He also said that his goal was to really contribute something to the organization and the REEA was, in a way, a validation of the impact that he has made in the organization.

“Hopefully, what I’ve done and achieved from being a rank and file employee all the way to where I am now will motivate others and will make them realize that this organization really values our contribution and passion for work,” Raffy said.

On His Biggest Career and Life Motivation

Raffy learned to value the importance of service, passion and commitment: three values that he believes are considered the ‘true mark of a RAFInian.’

More than anything else, to leave a mark and make an impact with RAFI and RMF have always been his biggest motivation.

“Second would be my family, especially my wife and daughter, I work hard to give them, perhaps not the best, but at least a comfortable life.”

Above all else, to God. “I always pray to God that He would continually guide me in everything I do, enlighten me in making the right decisions.”

Biggest Career Challenge

Challenges are opportunities in disguise, Baladjay believes.

“I think challenges are given, especially if you have a goal. But I always treat challenges as opportunities; opportunity to learn new things, opportunity to test your maturity and your decision making skills.”

He also said that in order to overcome challenges, you have to analyze the problem first then plan if it can be resolved, then eventually, ask your superiors, or your mentors, if needed.

“At the end of the day, these things are normal, what’s important is that you face it, document what you’ve learned so that if you are confronted with the same challenges again, it will be much easier,” Raffy added.

On Leaving a Mark, Influencing the New Generation

“I really want to influence new employees to develop a passion for work for this is one of the keys for their growth,”

Raffy also added that one of the reasons why he works and strives hard to be successful is because he knows that being on top could help influence people on much larger scale.

“I want to be remembered through my passion for work, commitment and achievements; and hopefully be a motivation for others,” Raffy said.

On His Greatest Lesson

Passion and humility are everything for Baladjay.

“You need to put your heart, passion and commitment in everything that you do.”

“Value your contribution rather that what you receive from this organization. You also need to value humility for this will make you continuously learn, improve and develop yourself.”

Thanking People That Matters

Raffy said that he would not be here if not for the people that he has worked with before and now.

“I would like to thank my mentors from my Buffer Trust Staff days: Ronnie Garcia, my former Branch Managers, Sir Edward Butal, and Sir Nenito Gonzales; my Area Manager Ma’am Naomi Navacilla, my friends, Dominic, Val, Ma’am Nenen and Ma’am Hya. Our leaders, Ma’am Ailyne, Sir Jonar, and Ma’am Tess who really played a big role in what I have achieved so far.”

“All of them are the reason why I’m here. In one way or another, I’ve learned a lot because of their generosity in sharing their expertise and ideas.”

Raffy added that if there’s a one-liner quote that best describe his journey in RMF, it would be this: “my value as an employee is measured by the contributions I made rather than what I have achieved.” #IAMRAFI

In line with its digital transformation roadmap, the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) recently launched two applications — MeasureApp and Grants Management System (GMS) — that could improve its internal processes and bring about new ways of collaborating with partners and stakeholders.

MeasureApp

MeasureApp is a platform for creating customized forms and scorecards. Once the forms and scorecards are set up, users and respondents may access them via desktop or mobile, and directly input data into the system real-time. MeasureApp revolutionizes RAFI’s processes for gathering, consolidating, reporting, and analyzing data, which are currently being done on paper and spreadsheets.

The Education Development Unit of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI-EDU) is pioneering the use of MeasureApp for its next round of SEED Awards in 2018. MeasureApp was launched with stakeholders during the RAFI Education Experience (EdX) and 2017 Seal of Excellence in Education Development (SEED) awarding ceremony last May 11, 2018. RAFI-EDU helps in the formation of effective learning environments by providing high-quality, cost-effective school infrastructure, and by capacitating school communities for the continuous improvement of learning outcomes.

Validators in school districts across Cebu can now directly input their assessment of each participating school to MeasureApp using mobile phones and tablets. Results of the assessment per school, per district, and the entire province will be readily available to RAFI, as well as external users like teachers, school administrators, district superintendents, and other Department of Education officers.

The Our Cebu Program of RAFI-Integrated Development Unit (RAFI-IDU) and the Early Childhood Care and Development Checklist of the Dolores Aboitiz Children’s Fund of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation (RAFI-DACF) are also expected to be set up in MeasureApp within the year.

Grants Management System

The Grants Management System (GMS), meanwhile, enables the automation of front-to-end process for financial grants to partner-institutions. RAFI-DACF will employ this solution for its Children Welfare Program.

Key functions of GMS facilitate the processing of grantees’ accreditation, evaluation, and approval of grant proposals; and processing, reporting, and monitoring of financial transactions. Grantee-institutions can upload to GMS their progress reports on project implementation and financial liquidation, and receive notifications and other communications via their user accounts and emails.

Other program teams whose interventions include financial grants to other institutions can also take advantage of the app.

Digital transformation

The launching of these two apps is another milestone in RAFI’s journey for digital transformation. Early this year, the Corporate Solutions (formerly Strategy, Systems and Solutions) team was established under the Corporate Assurance and Advisory cluster, which will champion the digital transformation of the Foundation.

Corporate Solutions leverages on its synergy between the Apps Development team and Operational Excellence team to deliver solutions that will continuously improve the Foundation’s multi-faceted value delivery chain.

The first week of April was a busy one for the Micro-finance Unit of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI Micro-finance), with new branches opened in different areas in Samar province in three consecutive days.

The branches in Catarman, Catbalogan and Calbayog, and Basey were opened last April 3, 4, and 5, respectively.

“Penetrating Samar, reported to be the third poorest province in the country, is our way of helping more families through our programs and services, and reaching out to them so we could help elevate their lives,” said RMF Regional Manager for Leyte and Samar Junrey Bugsocan.

Bugsocan added that RMF is planning to widen its reach further in Samar

by opening at least four more branches, considering the wide coverage of the province.

“I joined RMF because of the products and insurance it offers,” said Gemma Tupa, 44, one of Calbayog branch’s first clients and chairperson of the Capoocan group.

Aside from the branches in Samar, RMF opened three other branches in April, this time in Leyte and Negros Occidental. Tacloban 2 branch in Leyte was opened last April 5, while the branches of Sagay and Cadiz 2 in Negros Occidental were opened last April 6.

As of April 2018, RMF now has a total of 99 branches.

The Microfinance Program of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI Micro-finance) provides financial and non-financial services to micro-entrepreneurs with a mission of elevating lives of the vulnerable and disadvantaged communities through stable and rewarding livelihood.

In its quest to keep all employees safe and well prepared for calamities, the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) held its annual Fire and Evacuation Drill last April 27, 2018.

The drill allowed RAFI to not only comply with government regulations but to also spread awareness among RAFInians on proper safety procedures and precautions in case of fire, and to protect assets to ensure continuous operations.

It was also during the fire drill when pioneering members of RAFI’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) were commissioned into action. Each floor in the EADSC building has members assigned to the team, whose members serve as the key people in assisting fellow employees in times of emergency.

The actual drill started at around 2:50 p.m., when the alarm sounded off to indicate that there was a “fire emergency” in the building. When the Fire Suppression Team “failed” to contain the fire, employees were then told to vacate the premises, under the guidance of the assigned ERT floor marshals. The quick evacuation time, all done in five minutes and seven seconds, and presence of ERT medical team with emergency equipment and ‘grab bags’ earned the praise of the fire marshal observing the drill and evacuation procedures.

There was also an actual demonstration on how to properly use a fire extinguisher.

Prior to the actual drill and evacuation, a pre-drill seminar was conducted by FO3 Edelson Sarbida. He stressed on the importance of having an ERT in the workplace and a discussion on a more scientific and realistic approach to basic firefighting and proper crowd control.
