“Belayers, are you ready?” “Ready!”
“Lock check.” “Check!”
“I’m flying!” “Fly on!”
These are just some of the lines that participants of the Leadership Cascade Program (LCP) will never forget, aside from the rollercoaster ride of challenges, learning, self-discovery, and teamwork during the three-day activity.
AboitizPower’s (AP) Distribution Utilities (DU) Group recently partnered with the Professional Development Programs (PDP) team of the Kool Adventure Camp of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI-KAC) to conduct three batches of the program.
”Collaboration needs respect of roles, ideas and thoughts, and, most importantly, it needs trust. And that’s what we’re going to do in our three days here — we get to know each other better, how we act, how we do things, and hopefully it builds trust among us,” said Jim Aboitiz, AP DU’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Executive Vice President (EVP).
The first session was held on January 31 to February 2, 2018, the second batch on February 19 to 20, 2018, and the last on March 13 to 15, 2018.
Aboitiz led the three LCPs together with Visayan Electric Company COO Anton Perdices, Davao Light and Power Company COO Rodger Velasco, Cotabato Light and Power Company COO Ben Arkoncel, EnerZones COO Dante Pollescas, AP Vice President (VP) for Engineering Raul Lucero, AP VP for Customer Service Group Bienamier Garcia, Customer Services Group Assistant Vice President (AVP) Reynold Felix, AVP for Human Resource (HR) Unit Belen Catanduanes, AVP for IT Services Group Aladino Borja, AVP for IT Operations Group Lemuel Quilos, AVP for Supply Chain Group Clovis Racho.
A total of 85 managers and leaders from the engineering, admin and customer service units of VECO, Davao Light, Cotabato Light, Balamban EnerZone, Subic EnerZone, Lima EnerZone, Mactan EnerZone, and AP DU Corp. participated in the LCP.
The LCP had activities that focused on Personal Leadership Crossover Journey, Evaluation of Team for Agreement and Resolutions, Discussion on Key Learning about Personal Crossovers, Team and Organizational Performance relating to partnership and Team and Organizational Performance.
It centered on cooperation, collaboration and innovation (CCI), which makes up the DNA of a great team.
“The alignment of the different leaders created this one AP DU DNA… Collaboration is really people working together for a common goal, a shared goal. Cooperation is people working together but they have different things they need to accomplish,” said Aboitiz.
The highlight of the LCP was the session for the senior executives, which sought to enhance CCI at the senior executive level, to solicit support and align internal programs from different distribution units.
“Seeing them let go of their mindset to open up difficult conversation with the presence of all their COOs as coaches spelled success. They were able to create a safe environment to support difficult conversation during the whole session. They were able to support each other. They were able to find solutions to challenging situations in their area,” said Anthony Terence Ocampo, who facilitate the session with the senior executives.
After the program, the participants are expected to create personal and team resolutions or a change action plan on their leadership at work. They are also expected to develop a more committed team that is more aware of its goals and direction and to gain deeper knowledge and concrete experience with CCI.
“We have all made commitments of the things that we are going to change when we get back to our workplace, and I think what is very important as the last step is knowing what are the concrete things that we are all going to do to make collaboration, cooperation and improved innovation work at AboitizPower Distribution,” said Aboitiz.
The Kool Adventure Camp of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI-KAC) is the first and only fully dedicated Adventure Education Center in the Philippines. RAFI-KAC equips organizations and individuals with the character, competence, and citizenship to be leaders of change through powerful learning experiences.
