She believes that we are all born with a mission that will play a role in nation building — including preserving culture & heritage. After having spent ten years with RAFI, she continues to be a living testimony of how heritage and the arts remain to be relevant more than ever.

‘Mayang’ and her story, ten years ago

Loyalty is one of the brands Maybellane, or Mayang as she is fondly called, built for herself. Prior to working with RAFI she has gained experience in business, finance and packaging for about 10 years.  These experiences prepared her for her current job as the Casa Gorordo Museum Shop Assistant under the Culture & Heritage Unit of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation.

“I learned about RAFI through a friend, I applied for the Office Assistant post and then started working on January 7th, 2007.  It was very challenging for me at that time because there was no proper turn-over of responsibilities because there was no one yet in the museum, except for the director who was also new.”

But that didn’t stop Mayang from doing her job and doing it right.

“I took charge and made sure I gave everything I could to help the museum in every aspect, particularly its shop, ensuring that it was functional because there were many concerns that needed attention like cashiering, booking, ticketing of educational tours at that time.”

With this experience, she learned that she needed to be flexible in order to be able to help and contribute to her team.

“I learned to adjust and contribute to every task possible so I could help in the growth for our team. I took it upon myself to learn.” Mayang said.

Career growth — the RAFI way

For Mayang, working with RAFI is more than just having a secured career, it is about building connections and friendships with the people around you.

“RAFI gave me a different perspective in life, it gave me a wonderful opportunity to gain friends and a new family. What’s really nice about RAFI is that the people here don’t just treat each other as co-employees, workmates, or as bosses — people treat each other as family.”

“Also, I have had different jobs before but working here is different because we know that we are helping people, so no matter what challenges come our way, we get motivated by our mission as an organization and we simply carry on.” she added.

On her responsibility as an ‘architect of change’

Mayang continued to share her experience and how she helps the organization, particularly in one of RAFI’s mission of preserving the Cebuano identity under the  Culture and Heritage Unit.

“In my job, I enjoy selling the products of different Visayan and Mindanao tribes and sharing stories about their culture and heritage, like the weaving of the Mangyan tribe of Mindoro and the Tiboli tribe of Lake Sebu, South Cotabato.  I do this eagerly, one product at a time!”

On finding meaning and having impact

“Through my job I learn and experience their culture.” She added.

“Being responsible helped me to overcome all the challenges that I have experienced. I always think that my job is a venue for me to make a difference and contribute to the over-all mission of RAFI.”

On being a RAFINIAN and leaving a mark

“In RAFI, I found love not just in the Foundation but also among the people surrounding me. Furthermore, RAFI helped me grow as a an individual, made me more mature, and more responsible in dealing with life’s challenges.”

Mayang also said that there are many people who have helped her throughout her career in RAFI.

“Making a positive impact in the many different things that I do serves as a great motivation for me. It gives me happiness when guests, especially children who tour the museum, enjoy their visit because of the warm welcome, story-telling and other quality service that I give.” Mayang said.

“There is real growth in the museum industry and in culture & heritage, especially in RAFI, where the Aboitiz family value the preservation of the culture & heritage of Filipinos.”  She added.

Mayang on her greatest lesson learned and the people that matters

Mayang said that her family and her loved ones motivate her to do her best everyday.

“They inspire me to work hard and become a better person, and I hope that they too will be inspired by my actions and example as a RAFInian.”

“I am nobody without my family, especially my daughter; I am a proud single mother and my daughter Kim means the world to me. I remember when she told me that whatever challenges or trials we may face, Ma, I will forever be here for you, and that motivates me to work harder.  I love my daughter very much, and she even gave me two naughty but very loving grandchildren — Paul and Precious.”

On her greatest career accomplishment and challenge

“For me, being part of the team that gave birth to the new Casa Gorordo Museum is my greatest accomplishment and biggest challenge, so far.”

“I am motivated to do work, especially that I am hands-on in the shop, and have a big responsibility of looking for suppliers and new product offerings. I’ve said, we are not just selling the product itself but we are telling the culture & heritage of the Filipinos.”

On her commitment as a RAFInian and to the people that matters to her

“First of all, I love and thank God for all His blessings and guidance. God never made me feel alone.”

“Second, I want to thank RAFI for helping me become who I am today, and to DBC who has been and still is my mentor, in both my professional and personal life.  She is truly an inspiration to me.”

“To my colleagues especially here in CGM, we are a great family here and that matters the most.”

“And of course, to my family, my daughter and my two cute and loving apos, Paul and Precious, you are all my rock.” She said.

“I want to continue to excel in my job here in RAFI. For being a RAFInian, an architect of change, is a great responsibility especially to the communities we serve. With determination and the right attitude is the way I could lead by example. I am happy, #IAMRAFI.”
