In a small town of Madridejos, Bantayan Island, lived a dreamer whose passion to serve the community made him sacrifice his dream of joining the Philippine Navy.
This is the story of Reynan Locaylocay, recently awarded as the Most Outstanding Branch Manager during the 2018 RAFI Micro-Finance, Inc. (RMF) Staff General Assembly.
The choice between RMF and his Philippine Navy dream
Being the eldest son of a fisherman, Reynan is a great believer that hard work and perseverance are the keys in achieving one’s goal. His mother is a hog raiser and was a client of RMF for 12 years. After he stopped going to college, he took the entrance exam for the Philippine Navy in 2012 and passed.
While waiting for his medical results, Reynan decided to apply as a Trust Staff at the RMF Bogo branch.
“I started working with RMF on May 4, 2012, and I was challenged with the clients I handled the first time I joined RMF. I had to handle an area with 11% Portfolio At Risk (PAR). The pressure and the nature of the job was hard.”
Because of Reynan’s dedication to his work, he was able to reduce his PAR as his number of clients grew.
His life’s biggest turning point was when he had to choose between RMF or pursue his dream of working in the Navy.
“When my medical exam came and I passed, I was ready to enter the Philippine Navy. But when I thought of the clients and my workmates in the branch, I felt like it would be such a waste since I already established good relationships with them. I really had fun with the job, and being able to help the clients made me decide to stay in RMF.”
His big break in RMF
Knowing the consequence of giving up his dream of joining the Philippine Navy, Reynan found contentment in serving the Nanays. Not long enough, his big break in RMF came.
“Our Branch Manager during that time was Sir Richard Zamora. He was my inspiration, he trained us how to handle the clients properly. It wasn’t long until they saw my potential as a Branch Manager.”
Richard Zamora, the Branch Manager of Bogo branch, witnessed how Reynan developed professionally and has always mentored him during his Trust Staff days, “His dedication to his job and the way he handled pressure is what brought him to where he is now. He really deserves his awards and achievements.” Reynan was awarded as 1 st Runner-up in the Most Outstanding Trust Staff search during the 2015 RMF Staff General Assembly.
Reynan was then assigned in the RMF Daanbantayan branch and got promoted as the Branch Manager last November 2016.
“Daanbantayan was really challenging, given that it is only one municipality and the clients were not that cooperative when it comes to center meetings. Also, we have to work double time since my staff were all new to this kind of job.” Reynan said.
All of Reynan’s efforts showed results immediately, evidenced by its maintaining zero PAR since the establishment of the branch.
Being an inspiration to others
Aside from meeting targets on the number of clients and loan portfolios, Reynan’s responsibility as the Branch Manager is also to inspire his staff in doing their specific tasks well.
“What I learned from my previous experiences is to never underestimate your staff if s/he commits a mistake. Instead, motivate them more and make them realize their mistake and learn from it rather than insulting them and breaking their confidence.”
He also added that one of the things that made his staff stay with the team is that they see to it that they also get to enjoy the fruit of their labor. Every time they accomplish something, they would celebrate by eating dinner together.
On his recent recognition
During the 2018 RMF Staff General Assembly, Reynan bagged the coveted awarded of Most Outstanding Branch Manager.
“It was really a shocking experience for me. I did not expect that award because I knew there were a lot of great branch managers from different areas.”
From pursuing his dream of joining the Philippine Navy, Reynan’s goal has evolved into something similar, and that is helping people — helping more clients and be an inspiration to his staff by being a good example through his words and deeds.
“I didn’t really wish I’d get this award, of becoming the most outstanding branch manager. All I was praying for was that my staff would get recognized for all the dedication they put to their work; their dedication is incomparable.”
Responding to his Calling
Aside from the bond that he has with his team, one of the reasons why Reynan chose to stay are the clients that he was able to help.
“Giving the clients the financial support they need and seeing them grow as successful businesswomen makes me happy. Even though the financial support was not from my own pocket, but serving these clients whole-heartedly and seeing their immeasurable happiness is worth more than a thousand awards anyone could ask for.” Reynan said.
“I knew then that this was my calling.” He added.
On being a RAFINIAN
Reynan has showed pure passion and dedication to his job and his service to the community.
“I always see to it that I’m working in line with RAFI’s core values; God-centeredness, Integrity, Service, and Respect. These are the values that I also teach to my staff.”
Being a role-model to his team, Reynan always sees to it that he doesn’t just inspire his staff but that he is also able to touch the lives of the clients through his service and compassion.
His life inspiration and motivation
Reynan emphasized that his greatest inspiration in life is his family, for giving him countless second chances.
“They have been with me through ups and downs and I could never ask for more. My parents, despite not having all the treasure in the world, gave me more than what they had. I was not able to finish school but my father inspired me to do my best in everything I do, because hard work and dedication will take me anywhere I want to go.”
He’s also a great believer of giving service to the community to be able to achieve peace and resiliency.
“My mother always told me to serve other people despite not having enough and to never expect anything in return because God is always watching — God sees everything.”
“To my family, my RAFI-Micro-finance (RMF) family, my Daanbantayan team, and to all our clients, what I have now is not because of my accomplishments alone but because of you. I wouldn’t have achieved this kind of award if not for your presence and support. Thank you very much.” #IAMRAFI
