She believes that we are all born with a mission that will play a role in nation building — including preserving culture & heritage. After having spent ten years with RAFI, she continues to be a living testimony of how heritage and the arts remain to be relevant more than ever.

‘Mayang’ and her story, ten years ago

Loyalty is one of the brands Maybellane, or Mayang as she is fondly called, built for herself. Prior to working with RAFI she has gained experience in business, finance and packaging for about 10 years.  These experiences prepared her for her current job as the Casa Gorordo Museum Shop Assistant under the Culture & Heritage Unit of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation.

“I learned about RAFI through a friend, I applied for the Office Assistant post and then started working on January 7th, 2007.  It was very challenging for me at that time because there was no proper turn-over of responsibilities because there was no one yet in the museum, except for the director who was also new.”

But that didn’t stop Mayang from doing her job and doing it right.

“I took charge and made sure I gave everything I could to help the museum in every aspect, particularly its shop, ensuring that it was functional because there were many concerns that needed attention like cashiering, booking, ticketing of educational tours at that time.”

With this experience, she learned that she needed to be flexible in order to be able to help and contribute to her team.

“I learned to adjust and contribute to every task possible so I could help in the growth for our team. I took it upon myself to learn.” Mayang said.

Career growth — the RAFI way

For Mayang, working with RAFI is more than just having a secured career, it is about building connections and friendships with the people around you.

“RAFI gave me a different perspective in life, it gave me a wonderful opportunity to gain friends and a new family. What’s really nice about RAFI is that the people here don’t just treat each other as co-employees, workmates, or as bosses — people treat each other as family.”

“Also, I have had different jobs before but working here is different because we know that we are helping people, so no matter what challenges come our way, we get motivated by our mission as an organization and we simply carry on.” she added.

On her responsibility as an ‘architect of change’

Mayang continued to share her experience and how she helps the organization, particularly in one of RAFI’s mission of preserving the Cebuano identity under the  Culture and Heritage Unit.

“In my job, I enjoy selling the products of different Visayan and Mindanao tribes and sharing stories about their culture and heritage, like the weaving of the Mangyan tribe of Mindoro and the Tiboli tribe of Lake Sebu, South Cotabato.  I do this eagerly, one product at a time!”

On finding meaning and having impact

“Through my job I learn and experience their culture.” She added.

“Being responsible helped me to overcome all the challenges that I have experienced. I always think that my job is a venue for me to make a difference and contribute to the over-all mission of RAFI.”

On being a RAFINIAN and leaving a mark

“In RAFI, I found love not just in the Foundation but also among the people surrounding me. Furthermore, RAFI helped me grow as a an individual, made me more mature, and more responsible in dealing with life’s challenges.”

Mayang also said that there are many people who have helped her throughout her career in RAFI.

“Making a positive impact in the many different things that I do serves as a great motivation for me. It gives me happiness when guests, especially children who tour the museum, enjoy their visit because of the warm welcome, story-telling and other quality service that I give.” Mayang said.

“There is real growth in the museum industry and in culture & heritage, especially in RAFI, where the Aboitiz family value the preservation of the culture & heritage of Filipinos.”  She added.

Mayang on her greatest lesson learned and the people that matters

Mayang said that her family and her loved ones motivate her to do her best everyday.

“They inspire me to work hard and become a better person, and I hope that they too will be inspired by my actions and example as a RAFInian.”

“I am nobody without my family, especially my daughter; I am a proud single mother and my daughter Kim means the world to me. I remember when she told me that whatever challenges or trials we may face, Ma, I will forever be here for you, and that motivates me to work harder.  I love my daughter very much, and she even gave me two naughty but very loving grandchildren — Paul and Precious.”

On her greatest career accomplishment and challenge

“For me, being part of the team that gave birth to the new Casa Gorordo Museum is my greatest accomplishment and biggest challenge, so far.”

“I am motivated to do work, especially that I am hands-on in the shop, and have a big responsibility of looking for suppliers and new product offerings. I’ve said, we are not just selling the product itself but we are telling the culture & heritage of the Filipinos.”

On her commitment as a RAFInian and to the people that matters to her

“First of all, I love and thank God for all His blessings and guidance. God never made me feel alone.”

“Second, I want to thank RAFI for helping me become who I am today, and to DBC who has been and still is my mentor, in both my professional and personal life.  She is truly an inspiration to me.”

“To my colleagues especially here in CGM, we are a great family here and that matters the most.”

“And of course, to my family, my daughter and my two cute and loving apos, Paul and Precious, you are all my rock.” She said.

“I want to continue to excel in my job here in RAFI. For being a RAFInian, an architect of change, is a great responsibility especially to the communities we serve. With determination and the right attitude is the way I could lead by example. I am happy, #IAMRAFI.”

The Municipality of Ronda is taking a step further in its effort to support the implementation of the Integrated Area Development Program of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI-IAD) in the seventh district of Cebu.

Last Feb. 13-14, 2018, more than 40 participants attended the IAD Team Formation and Action Planning held at the town’s multi-purpose hall. The activity was supported by the Cebu Provincial Government through the Provincial Planning and Development Office.

The activity sought to help build the capacity of the focal team in preparation for subsequent activities of the IAD program, which aims to create a development plan and vision for the seventh congressional district.

As a result of the two-day activity, the IAD Focal Team presented their plans, most of which were aligned to the IAD Program activities. These include conducting regular meetings, identifying and conducting an inventory of the assets of the local government unit (LGU), and conducting a baseline survey.

Mayor Mariano “Nonie” Blanco III, through an ordinance, created the local IAD Focal Team to oversee, harmonize, monitor, and evaluate the implementation of the IAD program and designate the program coordinator/point person.

“I’m grateful that this training was finally conducted here in our municipality. It is important that the focal team who will be involved in this program should do their role,” Blanco said.

Members of Ronda’s IAD Focal team are department heads, and representatives from a people’s organization, a civic group, and the academe identified the by LGU. Barangay officials and purok leaders also joined the activity. Most of them said they learned a lot from the training, as it made them be aware of the “integrated development” and “district-wide development” approach. They also learned the importance of being in one team, with one goal and vision.

“Through the IAD Program, we will not just think of our own town, but also of the progress of entire seventh district. We should not be selfish of our resources but instead think of what we can share to the other towns in the district,” Mayor Blanco said.

Ronda is a fifth class municipality in the southwestern coast of Cebu Province, about 81.5 kilometers southwest of Cebu City and is one of eight (8) LGUs in the seventh district.

The Integrated Area Development Program of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. (RAFI-IAD) provides Local Government Units (LGUs) with technical assistance towards socio-economic development.

“When you crochet for someone, you give her a piece of yourself,” said Sarah Palmares who led a bevy of women during the “Ganchillo at the Azotea” workshop at the Casa Gorordo Museum of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI-CGM) last Feb. 3, 2018. “You actually hold every strand of the yarn in each of your creation.”

By demonstrating the weaving and presenting a few samples, she introduced the basic crochet (or ganchillo) stitches. There are two common ways of holding the crochet hook: the pencil and the grip style.

The chain stitch involves the overlapping of the strand through a hook. The slip stitch is entwined in two loops while the half double is completed by pulling up three loops in one hook. Loop counts vary according to the desired pattern, especially in more complex stitches, such as the double crochet, treble crochet, and double treble crochet.

“In the early 1900s, crochet was taught in home economics classes in public schools in Cebu. The craft was introduced to Cebu by the Spaniards,” she said.

She said that our ancestors were limited to stitching doilies, table and bed covers, and drapes using fine cotton hook and cotton yarn based on printed patterns from books. For her, however, it is the process of making fabric out of rolls of yarns, compared to sewing which is based on ready-made materials.

“Ganchillo now has evolved into a very versatile craft. It is purely handmade, unlike knitting which is done by machines. Crochet is now being used in creating amigurimu (Japanese yarn creatures), stuffed toys, and accessories (earrings, headbands). Crafters incorporate crochet to upcycle items that are supposed to be old into new items, such as aluminum can pop tabs to decorate crochet bag or jewelry. Nowadays, crochet skills and pattern sharing, marketing have become easier through the web and social media,” said Palmares, whose work samples could be seen in her Instagram account “tomatofire_crochets.”

A native of Samar, she moved to Cebu in college and worked in radio broadcasting briefly. She now works for an Australian firm doing graphic designs and e-ecommerce. Crocheting is a side business.

“Yarn bombing” is also one of the movements that she participates online. It is a form of street art—or a group of scintillating ornamentals—that is used to embellish public places like parks, trains, and buses. She observes that availability and the improvement of materials have engaged them even more. Now, yarns have several shades of colors, spun from animal hairs, plant or synthetic fibers. Each varies according to thickness, plies, and skeins.

Another way of producing yarns is cutting plastic bags and t-shirts into shreds; each strand can be manipulated into rags, bags, and fashion accessories.

Meanwhile, co-facilitating the session with Palmares was Rose Buenconsejo (“craftynanay” on Instagram) who is keen at how crochet has affected our clothing behavior.

“I could say that ganchillo can be categorized in the ‘slow fashion movement’ together with hand-woven textiles, knitting, and other hand-crafted fashion, which take a lot of time and a lot of human hands involved. It cannot be mass-produced,” Buenconsejo commented. “The old ganchillo in the Philippines was more about decorative pieces, though; once in a while, my nanay would crochet me a top. But it’s definitely different in colder countries where they crochet wearables to keep them warm. Since we’re tropical country, we’re more into decorative items.”

The Biodiversity Conservation Program of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI-BioCon) conducted a farm-planning workshop to its two tree-growing community partners in Barangays Lamesa in Balamban and Bunga in Toledo City last Jan. 24 and 26, 2018, respectively.

Members of the Lamesa Farmers’ Association and Unified Farmers’ Cooperative and other interested lot owners who attended the workshop are all residents of Barangays Lamesa and Bunga. Farming is the main source of income of most of them.

The workshop aimed to educate farmers on how to maximize their land by teaching them the 7-in-1 canopy layer system of planting crops and native trees. This provided participants further information to upgrade their own land.

The BioCon Team provided inputs on how to identify tree and plant categories according to slope, location, and sunlight exposure. The farmers were also made to observe the natural environment and to relate the natural system of plants and trees with their usual farming practices. They were also taught to identify which plants and trees belong to dominant, co-dominant, climber, shrubs, crawlers, shade tolerant, and gap fillers categories.

By the end of the workshop, the participants were able to create their own farm plan according to the scientific method introduced to them. They were also able include their preferred tree species to plant as possible income source.

By providing them with the technical capacity to care for their own land, taking care of the plant and trees will now become part of their priority.

RAFI’s BioCon program offers community-based and environmentally appropriate tree growing services.

A Memorandum of Understanding was entered into by the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) with Santa Clara University (SCU) of Santa Clara, California, and the University of San Carlos (USC) of Cebu City, Philippines, for a tripartite collaboration to implement the Aboitiz Social Ventures Cebu.  The signing was done last February 9, 2018, at SCU, Santa Clara California by Fr. Michael E. Engh, SJ, Ph.D. President of SCU and Jon Ramon Aboitiz, Chair and CEO of RAFI.  Fr. Dionisio M. Miranda, SVD, SthD, President of USC signed the agreement a week after in Cebu City.

Aboitiz Social Ventures Cebu aims to create a supportive ecosystem for social entrepreneurs in Cebu with the following key pillars: (1) a higher education partner capable of teaching students and conducting field-based action research to accelerate social entrepreneurship approaches in the Philippines, (2) a social enterprise business accelerator that offers direct training for promising social entrepreneurs as well as the ability to proactively replicate/translate proven social enterprise operational models from around the globe into the Philippine island context, and (3) a local network of banks and investors who are familiar with impact investing approaches.  The three collaborators approve the program proposal defining the details and budget allocation in the implementation.

The Aboitiz Social Ventures Cebu will have the following program components: (A) Forming Social Entrepreneurship Center with key program interventions for the (1) capacitation and institutionalization of the USC Entrepreneurship Center and (2) development of curriculum and faculty training and development workshops;  (B) Establishing a social enterprise accelerator that (1) recruits mentors and builds the capacity of regional social enterprises to scale their social impact, (2) pilots a multi-year initiative to blueprint, replicate, and accelerate social enterprise business models that address key sustainable development gaps common to the Islands & Islets of Southeast Asia, and (3) prepares a network of Cebu-based impact investors.

The three collaborators USC, RAFI, and SCU share the same vision of uplifting the lives of the poor and marginalized by catalyzing sustainable and scalable solutions across the Pacific Islands in general and the Visayas and Mindanao regions of the Philippines in particular. The collaborators further agree that a Center for Social Entrepreneurship under the auspices of USC is imperative and shall be created to mobilize resources and implement social enterprise capacity development initiatives. They also agree to share resources in achieving this mission.

The Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) is a non-stock, non-profit organization with the strategic goal of creating happy and livable communities with high levels of well being through a comprehensive approach that champions best practices in community development.

In a small town of Madridejos, Bantayan Island, lived a dreamer whose passion to serve the community made him sacrifice his dream of joining the Philippine Navy.

This is the story of Reynan Locaylocay, recently awarded as the Most Outstanding Branch Manager during the 2018 RAFI Micro-Finance, Inc. (RMF) Staff General Assembly.

The choice between RMF and his Philippine Navy dream

Being the eldest son of a fisherman, Reynan is a great believer that hard work and perseverance are the keys in achieving one’s goal. His mother is a hog raiser and was a client of RMF for 12 years. After he stopped going to college, he took the entrance exam for the Philippine Navy in 2012 and passed.

While waiting for his medical results, Reynan decided to apply as a Trust Staff at the RMF Bogo branch.

“I started working with RMF on May 4, 2012, and I was challenged with the clients I handled the first time I joined RMF. I had to handle an area with 11% Portfolio At Risk (PAR). The pressure and the nature of the job was hard.”

Because of Reynan’s dedication to his work, he was able to reduce his PAR as his number of clients grew.

His life’s biggest turning point was when he had to choose between RMF or pursue his dream of working in the Navy.

“When my medical exam came and I passed, I was ready to enter the Philippine Navy. But when I thought of the clients and my workmates in the branch, I felt like it would be such a waste since I already established good relationships with them. I really had fun with the job, and being able to help the clients made me decide to stay in RMF.”

His big break in RMF

Knowing the consequence of giving up his dream of joining the Philippine Navy, Reynan found contentment in serving the Nanays. Not long enough, his big break in RMF came.

“Our Branch Manager during that time was Sir Richard Zamora. He was my inspiration, he trained us how to handle the clients properly. It wasn’t long until they saw my potential as a Branch Manager.”

Richard Zamora, the Branch Manager of Bogo branch, witnessed how Reynan developed professionally and has always mentored him during his Trust Staff days, “His dedication to his job and the way he handled pressure is what brought him to where he is now. He really deserves his awards and achievements.” Reynan was awarded as 1 st Runner-up in the Most Outstanding Trust Staff search during the 2015 RMF Staff General Assembly.

Reynan was then assigned in the RMF Daanbantayan branch and got promoted as the Branch Manager last November 2016.

“Daanbantayan was really challenging, given that it is only one municipality and the clients were not that cooperative when it comes to center meetings. Also, we have to work double time since my staff were all new to this kind of job.” Reynan said.

All of Reynan’s efforts showed results immediately, evidenced by its maintaining zero PAR since the establishment of the branch.

Being an inspiration to others

Aside from meeting targets on the number of clients and loan portfolios, Reynan’s responsibility as the Branch Manager is also to inspire his staff in doing their specific tasks well.

“What I learned from my previous experiences is to never underestimate your staff if s/he commits a mistake. Instead, motivate them more and make them realize their mistake and learn from it rather than insulting them and breaking their confidence.”

He also added that one of the things that made his staff stay with the team is that they see to it that they also get to enjoy the fruit of their labor. Every time they accomplish something, they would celebrate by eating dinner together.

On his recent recognition

During the 2018 RMF Staff General Assembly, Reynan bagged the coveted awarded of Most Outstanding Branch Manager.

“It was really a shocking experience for me. I did not expect that award because I knew there were a lot of great branch managers from different areas.”

From pursuing his dream of joining the Philippine Navy, Reynan’s goal has evolved into something similar, and that is helping people — helping more clients and be an inspiration to his staff by being a good example through his words and deeds.

“I didn’t really wish I’d get this award, of becoming the most outstanding branch manager. All I was praying for was that my staff would get recognized for all the dedication they put to their work; their dedication is incomparable.”

Responding to his Calling

Aside from the bond that he has with his team, one of the reasons why Reynan chose to stay are the clients that he was able to help.

“Giving the clients the financial support they need and seeing them grow as successful businesswomen makes me happy. Even though the financial support was not from my own pocket, but serving these clients whole-heartedly and seeing their immeasurable happiness is worth more than a thousand awards anyone could ask for.” Reynan said.

“I knew then that this was my calling.” He added.

On being a RAFINIAN

Reynan has showed pure passion and dedication to his job and his service to the community.

“I always see to it that I’m working in line with RAFI’s core values; God-centeredness, Integrity, Service, and Respect. These are the values that I also teach to my staff.”

Being a role-model to his team, Reynan always sees to it that he doesn’t just inspire his staff but that he is also able to touch the lives of the clients through his service and compassion.

His life inspiration and motivation

Reynan emphasized that his greatest inspiration in life is his family, for giving him countless second chances.

“They have been with me through ups and downs and I could never ask for more. My parents, despite not having all the treasure in the world, gave me more than what they had. I was not able to finish school but my father inspired me to do my best in everything I do, because hard work and dedication will take me anywhere I want to go.”

He’s also a great believer of giving service to the community to be able to achieve peace and resiliency.

“My mother always told me to serve other people despite not having enough and to never expect anything in return because God is always watching — God sees everything.”

“To my family, my RAFI-Micro-finance (RMF) family, my Daanbantayan team, and to all our clients, what I have now is not because of my accomplishments alone but because of you. I wouldn’t have achieved this kind of award if not for your presence and support. Thank you very much.” #IAMRAFI
