The Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) through its GREENIN Philippines Program launched this year’s Run 2 Plant 4 GREENIN Philippines 2012 last May 10 at 2 p.m. at Cebu Provincial Capitol Conference Room.
During the press conference, conduct of the upcoming Run 2 Plant 4 GREENIN Philippines 2012 and results of last year’s Run 2 Plant 4 GREENIN Philippines were presented.
The launching was attended by representatives of the Cebu Provincial Government, Talisay City local government unit, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Interior and Local Government, and RAFI.
“It is a pleasure to be here in this media briefing because we have really presented something. We will not only be talking about what we intended to do because we’ve already done it and we will replicate what we have done,” Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia said.
This year, Run 2 Plant 4 GREENIN Philippines 2012 targets to plant 220,000 native tree seedlings all over Cebu Province on June 30, doubling last year’s target of 100,000
The event will be held simultaneously in 50 municipalities and component cities, including Cebu City, making the event a province-wide endeavor. The Cebu Provincial Government has issued an executive order mandating the implementation and institutionalization of Run 2 Plant 4 GREENIN Philippines throughout the province.
“The idea of this activity is not just to plant or for photo opt purposes, but to really grow trees to become forests,” Dominica Chua, RAFI chief operating officer, said.
The central event that targets 7,500 participants, surpassing the 5,000 target last year, will be held in an eight-hectare forestland in Jaclupan, Talisay City. The area will be planted with 20,000 native tree seedlings and will be developed into a forest model through a co-management agreement among DENR, Cebu Provincial Government, Talisay City government, and RAFI.
To ensure the growth and survival of the native trees seedlings planted during the event, RAFI will initiate monthly nurturance activities with National Greening Program (NGP) partners and GREENIN Philippines Program volunteers.
The event has two segments—the run and the planting. Unlike last year’s Run 2 Plant 4 GREENIN Philippines wherein the participants had to choose to run for 5k, 3k or 1k. This year will only have 3k to allow more participants, regardless of age, to participate in the running activity.
Run 2 Plant 4 GREENIN Philippines is held annually every last Saturday of June, which celebrates Environmental Month.
This event is in line with the national government’s National Greening Program and tied to DILG’s Billion Trees Program under NGP.
