RAFI’s walk against breast cancer bigger

PINK MARCH.  More than a thousand Cebuanos, organized by the  Ramon Aboitiz Foundation’s Eduardo J. Aboitiz Cancer Center, walk from the Cebu Business Park to the Asiatown I.T. Park wearing pink shirts last Oct. 3 to march against breast cancer, the leading cancer afflicting women in Cebu, and in celebration of Pink October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month

More than 1,400 men and women last Oct. 3 walked against breast cancer from the Cebu Business Park to the Asiatown I.T. Park in the Eduardo J. Aboitiz Cancer Center’s (EJACC) Moonwalk, 300 more than the number of participants last year.

The walk organized by the EJACC, a program of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation (RAFI), is always set during the night of the full moon in October, which is Breast Cancer Awarness Month and popularly called “Pink October.”

This annual walk against breast cancer also promotes awareness of this dreaded disease afflicting Cebuanas, through early detection via screenings and self-exams.

The Moonwalk, too, is dedicated to breast cancer victims and survivors, as participants lighted pink candles, illuminating the night with a thousand flames, at the culmination of the program done after the walk.

Jane Pacaide, a cancer survivor and president of Cebu Cancer Fight Inc. (CCFI), gave a testimony of her fight against the disease, calling it “walay batasan” since it attacks women of all ages, classes and constitution.

The 6th Moonwalk was participated by the different cancer support groups (Kahayag Network of Cancer Support Groups Inc., the umbrella organization of two other cancer support groups—CCFI, Cebu Breast Association, and CAN with GOD Foundation; Destiny Medical Fund Inc.; and I Can Serve), different barangays (Apas, Lahug, Central-Cogon, Tisa, Buhisan, Cogon-Pardo, Sambag I, Sambag II, San Nicolas, Pahina Central, Calamba, Labangon, Luz, Guadalupe, Kamputhaw, Day-as, Parian, Sto. Niño, Tinago, Tejero, Carreta, Hipodromo, Mabolo, Capitol Site, and Sapangdaku), medical schools (Southwestern University, University of San Jose-Recoletos, Cebu Institute of Technology, Salazar Institute of Technology, St. Paul’s College, University of Southern Philippines (USP) and USP Foundation, University of Cebu, University of the Visayas-Main and Banilad, University of San Carlos-Talamban, Cebu Velez College, and Cebu Doctors University), non-government organizations (the Kalipunan ng Liping Pilipina, Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation, Empowerment Reaffirmation Paternal Abilities Training, and Gender and Development), civic organization (Rotary Club of Cebu Fuente), youth organization (the Young Minds Academy alumni), and other organizations, such as the Perpetual Succor Hospital-Cebu Cancer Institute and Mabolo Police Station.
